Utility workers go to cut off retiree's electricity and come face to face with a grenade
Pakrac, Croatia - A 71-year-old retiree threw a hand grenade at the utility workers who came to shut off his electricity after he hadn't paid his bills.
According to Croatian media, one of the three workers was critically injured in the incident on Wednesday in the small town of Pakrac. The town is about 75 miles east of Zagreb.
The police reported that the employee was seriously wounded in the head and abdomen by shrapnel when the hand grenade exploded.
The two other employees from the electric company were also wounded, but their injuries were reportedly less serious.
The police arrested the 71-year-old at the scene.
Hand grenades seem like they might be difficult to come by, but it's not that wild when one considers the recent history of the region.
Following the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, Croatia and its neighbor Serbia were at war from 1991 to 1995. Pakrac was on the front lines of this conflict, and many of the weapons, including pistols and hand grenades, left over from the war are still circulating among the population in the area.
