Eyes wide shut: Woman almost loses her eyesight after nighttime glue accident

Detroit, Michigan – When Yacedrah Williams woke up to take her contacts out, she never expected it might be the last time she opened her eyes without medical assistance.

This might sound familiar: you wake up in the middle and need to do something basic, like go to the bathroom or drink a glass of water. Do you bother turning on the lights?

In Williams' case, that something was taking her contacts out, which she had forgotten to do. In complete darkness, the woman reached into her purse to feel around for the bottle of eye drops.

At the time, there was no doubt in Williams' mind that she had grabbed the right item, but it wasn't long until she realized how wrong she was.

The Detroit native woke up the next morning to a horrifying situation: her eyes were sealed shut! No matter how much she tried to rinse them with water, they wouldn't open.

As it turned out, that little bottle she thought was eye drops was actually nail glue, which she had dropped into her eyes the night before!

Fortunately, her husband Derrick Williams was home and able to lend a hand with the bizarre accident. In an interview with ABC affiliate WXYZ-TV Detroit, Williams said, "I was just trying to pull my eyes apart, but I couldn't, and I was just screaming for him to call 9-1-1."

The couple darted off to the hospital in search of urgent medical attention.

Doctors were able to remove the glue from her eye, which fortunately landed on her contact lens, keeping it off of her actual eyeball.

Williams wasn't the first case of this kind they had encountered and the doctors strongly suggested the woman turn a light on the next time to avoid getting herself in the same sticky situation.

In the end, Williams was lucky: the very thing she was trying to get out of her eyes ended up saving her from permanent damage!
