In a new interview, the 54-year-old actor dished about his upcoming return as Wolverine.

Marvel fans will remember that the character actually died in 2017's Logan, adding a significant level of mystery to Jackman's appearance in the Deadpool sequel.

The actor gave fans a major hint as he discussed just how the hero might make his comeback.

"It's all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines," Jackman said, per Variety. "Now we can go back because, you know, it’s science. So, I don't have to screw with the Logan timeline, which was important to me. And I think probably to the fans too."

Jackman's talk of a potential time-travel device, whether a literal or narrative device, has led to rampant speculation about what the MCU might have in store for the famous clawed hero.

Wolverine will use the time-travel tech from Deadpool 2

Jackman's use of the term "device" in describing the movie's time travel led many to believe that the third film will use the same time-travel tech seen in Deadpool 2.

The time-travel device in the film is introduced by the villain Cable. Eventually, Deadpool is able to obtain the device and uses it to go back in time to save his girlfriend, Vanessa.

The device allows the user to travel to any point in the past, but the tech becomes less precise the further back in time the user attempts to go.

Following Jackman's latest comments, fans are now predicting that the device may play a key role in bringing Wolverine back in the present timeline.

Deadpool 3's Wolverine is a variant

Phase 4 of the MCU introduced the idea of variants – versions of characters from our universe that are living in an alternate timeline.

Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield appeared as variants of Tom Holland's Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home, while Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduced alternate versions of the Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange.

Variants wouldn't necessarily be time traveling, as most instances have seen the variants cross into alternate timelines in a parallel manner, leaving them at the same point in each timeline.

However, Deadpool 3 may look to expand the concept of variants in the MCU using a time-traveling variant of Logan.

Wolverine will use the time travel science from Avengers: Endgame

The MCU's first proper venture into time travel occurred in Avengers: Endgame, the dramatic conclusion to the run of the original six Avengers.

The team used Pym particles and quantum physics to travel back in time to retrieve all six Infinity Stones to reverse Thanos' snap.

Other theories pose the possibility that Deadpool 3 may bring this technology back in the re-introduction of Wolverine instead of Deadpool 2's time travel device.

The previous two Deadpool films were not considered to be part of the MCU, so bringing back this time travel method could help to ground the latest film in the franchise.

Fans will finally get the answer when Deadpool 3 hits theaters on November 8, 2024.
