Teen walks into Jersey restaurant and leaves her newborn with a complete stranger
Jersey City, New Jersey - A young mom happened to choose just the right stranger to leave her newborn baby with on Wednesday. Claiming to have found the baby outside, the teen handed the baby girl to a woman trained in first aid, who made sure the hours-old infant got proper care.
Security cameras captured the strange scene at the El Patron restaurant in New Jersey on Wednesday.
A young teen, just 14-years-old, came into the restaurant with a newborn baby girl, gave the baby to a customer, and left immediately.
According to ABC7 Chicago, Alease Scott was eating lunch with her boyfriend when the girl entered, claiming she had just found the abandoned baby outside. Scott is trained in first-aid and CPR and asked if she could check the baby's vital signs.
The teen handed the baby over and left. Scott soon discovered that the baby still had half of its umbilical cord attached, and was struggling to breath. First responders arrived quickly, and a little supplemental oxygen sorted the baby out.
Police were able to track down the teen, who was identified as the baby's mother. She will not be facing charges and her baby will be placed for adoption.
According to ChildWelfare.gov, all 50 states have some form of a safe haven law, which allows parents to leave their baby at a designated location such as a hospital or fire station, with no consequences. Different states may have limits on the baby's age.
