Alexa, stop suggesting stupid fads: 10-year-old encouraged to try dangerous challenge
Seattle, Washington - Your digital assistant can be informative, shake things up a bit at home, and suggest plenty of useful things – but that definitely doesn't apply to the dangerous spark plug challenge that Amazon's Alexa encouraged this 10-year-old to try.
Kristin Livdahl's daughter was following a Phys Ed YouTuber's challenges on the family's Echo. When she asked for another suggestion, Alexa served up a potentially sizzling tip: the spark plug challenge.
This insane dare asks people to "plug in a phone charger about halfway into a wall outlet, then touch a penny to the exposed prongs," according to the screenshot posted by the horrified mom.
Alexa snagged this electrifying task out of an old article on ourcommunitynow.com, which warns about the dangers of the then-trending TikTok outlet challenge.
However, Alexa chose not to add the warning that the site includes: "The penny creates both sparks and a potential fire hazard because of the electrical arcing." Needless to say, this is not something anyone – let alone kids – should be trying and the article was meant to warn people against it, not make it a fun suggestion.
Fortunately, Livdahl knew her daughter was smart enough not to try the challenge, and other parents won't have to worry about this particular task, since Amazon has already removed it from Alexa's database, according to a company statement to the BBC.
"As soon as we became aware of this error, we took swift action to fix it," the tech giant said.
