The incident occurred shortly after the Steelers were defeated 24-20 by the Jets at their Acrisure Stadium home on Sunday.

"Paramedics administered care on scene and transported him in critical condition to a local hospital," the city of Pittsburgh shared in a press release.

"He later passed from his injuries," the release added.

According to the New York Post, the Allegheny County medical examiner’s office confirmed the identity of the victim as Dalton Keane (27) of Monaca, Pennsylvania.

"We are aware of an unfortunate incident that occurred inside Acrisure Stadium today," said Burt Lauten, spokesperson for the Steelers football team.

"We are working with local authorities and helping their investigation into the matter," he added. "We are sending our thoughts and prayers to the guest’s family."

As several media outlets pointed out, escalator accidents haven't exactly been unheard of lately. Nine people were hospitalized after a New Orleans Saints v. New England Patriots last December, and a woman died at the Broncos stadium at the end of July.

Authorities are currently investigating Sunday's incident.
