The driver who caused the accident was reportedly speeding at the time of the crash, police said on Sunday. It is not yet clear if they were impaired while driving.

They apparently ran a red light and hit several vehicles, NBC reported.

The driver and a passenger were killed in the crash. The other victims included young juveniles to middle-aged adults.

Six more people were injured in the terrible incident.

The identities of the driver and victims have not yet been released.

"We have not seen a mass casualty traffic collision like this before," police spokesperson Alexander Cuevas told reporters.

"Our thoughts and our prayers are with the families who are experiencing a tremendous and unnecessary loss due to a careless and senseless act," North Las Vegas councilwoman Pamela Goynes-Brown said. "Please make this a safer community by slowing down. Pay attention to speed limits."

The deadly incident came just weeks after a six-vehicle crash just south of the city left four dead on January 10.

According to The Guardian, 2021 was the state's deadliest in 14 years for road-related incidents. Nevada reported 382 traffic fatalities in 2021 – up 18% over the previous year.
