Rodwin Allicock's circumstances of death sound so bizarre it's hard to believe.

A terrible accident took place on Thursday morning at Washington Memorial Park in Mount Sinai, which ultimately cost Allicock his life.

The man, who worked at the Long Island cemetery, was going about his usual business when tragedy struck.

He was digging a grave where a man was to be buried later. He had already reached the bottom and was just about to level it when the accident occurred.

According to Suffolk County Police officials, the 42-year-old was at a depth of just over seven feet when suddenly the walls of earth he had previously dug up collapsed on top of him, burying him alive.

Other employees who saw the accident from a distance frantically rushed over to help, but they were unable to reach him, the New York Post reported.

Police investigate how the accident could have happened

First responders from the Suffolk County emergency services and four local fire departments were called in, but help came too late for Allicock. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The exact circumstances of the tragic accident are unclear so far.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, as well as the Suffolk County police, are now investigating the death.

Social media posts from family members say Allicock was married and had two teenage sons.

His colleague YV Yang paid tribute to Rodwin on Facebook, writing, "Sleep in peace Rodwin Allicock. You was a great coworker and a great guy!"
