NFTs in smart TVs: will this hype train ever run out of steam?
San Jose, California - Samsung wants to get in on the Non-Fungible Token (NFT) craze, by giving you the option to buy, sell, and drool over digital artwork and pretend you're an art snob.
Samsung announced December 3 that it will let you curate your very own collection of NFTs in its newest line of TVs.
The built-in collection is combined with a marketplace, so you can buy, sell, and show off your meaningless digital tokens on the tech company's newest line of TVs.
Samsung is calling the application its NFT Platform: "This application features an intuitive, integrated platform for discovering, purchasing and trading digital artwork through MICRO LED, Neo QLED and The Frame."
Think of it like a classic online library with store features. You can browse popular NFTs, pony up silly amounts of cash for them, or simply let your TV display your digital collection of "art."
One feature that is actually well-thought-out, despite the silliness of digital art, is how Samsung promises that its "Smart Calibration" feature will go ahead and change how your TV displays the artwork, using instructions from the original artist.
That way, all of your digital art looks as good as possible, even if most NFTs out there look like absolute trash. But hey, at least it will be trash set to the correct resolution.
NFTs are still frivolous and risky, but now you can drop serious cash on a real object to show off your fake stuff and call it art.
