Rogers stuns top tennis player in another US Open women's bracket shocker
New York, New York - The US Open rolled on over the weekend and saw another upset on the court in the women’s draw, as the top-seeded player in the tournament was denied a chance at another major championship.
The day after one of the most surprising defeats took place at the Open with the elimination of Naomi Osaka, another title favorite Ashleigh Barty (25) was looking to add to her collection of major titles.
Yet, she was upset by Shelby Rogers in a three-set shocker on Saturday.
This was the sixth time these two have met in tournament play, and the first time the American Rogers has ever defeated the Aussie Barty.
Coming into this match, the 43rd-ranked Rogers hadn’t had any success at all against any top-seeded opponent, but it all changed against Barty.
The number one-seeded Barty fell to Rogers 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 in a match that had its share of ebbs and flows, with Rogers taking advantage of Barty’s rare undisciplined play on the tennis court.
A whopping 17 unforced errors from the 2021 Wimbledon champ helped Rogers take the first set between the two, but then the script flipped as Barty took full command to win the second set 6-1.
Unfortunately for Barty, her sloppy play reared its ugly head again, proving to doom her chance for her first US Open title.
Barty committed eight double faults to Rogers’ lone one. She also committed a total of 39 unforced errors by the match’s end.
She gave up a 5-2 third-set lead to the last American woman left in the singles bracket.
Rogers now has a spot in the Round of 16, going up against Great Britain’s Emma Raducanu on Monday.
