World Cup 2022: USMNT displays Iran flag without emblem ahead of showdown
Doha, Qatar - The United States men's national soccer team has started displaying the Iranian flag without the emblem of the Islamic Republic ahead of their big World Cup clash.
The duo meet amid heightened political tensions between the two countries in a Group B decider on Tuesday.
Both sides still have a chance of making the last 16. Iran famously beat the US 2-1 at the 1998 World Cup.
Iran has been gripped by anti-government protests following the death of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman named Mahsa Amini. The decision of US Soccer to display such a flag on its social media accounts is being viewed as a sign of support for the protesters.
Use of different Iran flags has been a feature of the World Cup.
Some Iranians have waved the flag with the emblem of the Islamic Republic in an apparent show of government support, while others have displayed a completely different flag from the era of the Shahs.
USMNT is hoping to pull through with a win against Iran after their first two games ended in a draw. They tied Wales 1-1 and came through 0-0 against England.
Iran is setting at second place in Group B after a 6-2 loss to England and a 2-0 victory over Wales.
The US-Iran matchup is set for November 29 at 2:00 PM EST.
