USWNT gets some good news after big disappointment at the Olympics
Chicago, Illinois - The US women’s soccer team is still the best in the world according to brand-new world rankings, released on Friday.
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) released its new world rankings and the United States is in soccer's top spot on the women’s side.
This is still big news, despite the disappointment of only earning a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games.
That underperformance alone might've been the reason why the US women lost 87.04 points in the FIFA calculation process. However, they still managed to edge out second-place Sweden, which finished the 2020 Tokyo Games with a silver medal.
Team Canada, who won gold in Tokyo, placed only sixth in FIFA's rankings.
Germany ended up with the number three rank after previously having the second spot, in last year's rankings. They are followed by the Netherlands, France, Canada, Brazil, England, Korea DPR, and Spain rounding out the top ten.
Holding on the top spot might be even more difficult for the USWNT going forward since one of their best in Carli Lloyd will soon be stepping away, with other veterans like Megan Rapinoe also mulling their potential retirement.
