Sha’Carri Richardson suffers upset on the road to Worlds
Eugene, Oregon - American sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson failed to qualify for the 100m final and Team USA's World Championship team after a disappointing 5th place finish on Thursday at the USA Track and Field Championships.
When the American sprinting sensation made a statement last Sunday after winning the women’s 200-meter race at the NYC Grand Prix, many believed the star athlete was back and on her way to her trademark dominance.
However, in a shocking result on Thursday night in her signature event, Richardson appeared on the track with her show-stopping swagger, but not her top-running speed.
The 22-year-old failed to advance out of the first round of the 100 meters in the key race, finishing fifth in her heat and an overall 23rd of 31 runners.
Now, pushed out of a place in the semifinals, the fan favorite will also miss claiming a spot on the US' 100m sprint team for the World Championships next month.
Sha'Carri Richardson has one more chance at Worlds
After finishing the race, Richardson had no desire to discuss her disappointing 11.31 second run, jogging quickly past reporters.
The heat was won by Tamari Davis, who posted 11.04 seconds to finish ahead of Jenna Prandini, who ran 11.18.
Richardson will have one final chance to run on the biggest stage outside of the Olympics, as she is also entered in the 200m at the Hayward Field meet. She is scheduled to run in her first heat on Friday night.
The top-three finishers in the finals race will punch their tickets to the World Championships as a member of Team USA. The event from July 15-24, set to take place in the United States for the first time ever, will also be held at Eugene, Oregon's Hayward Field.
