Two-Time Paralympic high jumper Roderick Townsend (29) won the gold medal in the men’s high jump T47 event and is now two-for-two in this event since his first appearance at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.

The T47 classification is for participants that have unilateral upper limb impairments affecting functions of the shoulder, elbow, and wrists.

Townsend soared over a height of 2.15 meters (7.05 feet), breaking the world record he originally set to earn his first gold in Rio, a height of 2.09 meters (6.87 feet).

His teammate Dallas Wise lept to a second-place tie with India’s Nishad Kumar. Since they both accepted the tie, there was no placing of a bronze medalist.

Townsend will be back on Tuesday to try for another gold in the T47 long jump final.

Daniel Romanchuk’s first-ever Paralympic medal was golden as he narrowly edged out the competition in the men’s 400-meter T54 final. The judges had to go to the photo finish to confirm his victory in a time of 45.72 seconds, just 0.01 second ahead of Thailand’s Athiwat Paeng-Nuea (45.73).

This race was run under the T54 classification, which is for paraplegic athletes with some function in their hands and arms, along with full or limited trunk function.

Having won gold previously at the 2015 Parapan American Games in Toronto, and the 2019 World Championships in Dubai, Romanchuk was able to find an extra gear in the last 25 meters of Sunday’s race to sneak just ahead of the Paralympic record holder from Thailand.

Yunqiang Dai (46.20) from China finished in third place to complete the podium with a bronze medal.

Romanchuk will be back for more action in more races on Thursday and will end his time in Tokyo with a marathon on Sunday.
