Paralympics: Team US one step closer to gold in wheelchair basketball and sitting volleyball
Tokyo, Japan - Team USA’s chances for more success continue as the women’s sitting volleyball and men’s basketball squads advanced further in their respective tournaments on Wednesday.
The US women’s sitting volleyball team defeated the Russian Paralympic Federation to advance to the semifinal round on Wednesday.
With both teams sitting in their pool with identical records, Wednesday’s match was a must-win for Team USA, who are looking to repeat as Paralympic champions.
Despite their toughest test against the Russians in the third set, the Americans took care of business, sweeping the RPC in three straight sets 25-19, 25-15, 25-22, ensuring that the team will at least play for a bronze medal heading into the final weekend of competition in Tokyo.
Monique Matthews (32) led all scorers with 15 points, also leading all players on the floor with 11 kills, while Lora Webster scored 13 points with a match-high five blocks, five kills, and three aces. And Heather Erickson racked up 11 points on seven kills to go with three aces in the game.
As a team, the US Women led the RPC in aces (8-4), kills (37-32), and blocks (11-8).
They will face another heavy favorite in Brazil in their semifinal match scheduled for Friday.
The men's wheelchair basketball team also took another successful step forward
Meanwhile, the men’s wheelchair basketball team stayed alive against Turkey, mounting a small comeback to win 52-45 on Wednesday for a spot in their tournament’s quarterfinal bracket.
While it might’ve been a low-scoring affair, it was Team USA who managed to get more shots to fall in their favor by the final buzzer. Part of that stemmed from capitalizing on disciplined play. They enjoyed a 17-4 advantage in turnovers, scoring 14 of their 52 points there.
And the bench stepped up with 23 points to Turkey’s six, to help the US starters get the win.
The United States faces Spain in the quarterfinals on Friday.
