Oklahoma's Brent Venables in the hot seat after OU's worst start in program history
Norman, Oklahoma - After suffering the worst loss in program history against the Texas Longhorns over the weekend, the Oklahoma Sooners' head coaching seat currently held by Brent Venables might soon be up for grabs.
In the Red River Rivalry game, Texas completely annihilated Oklahoma in the most shocking finish college football fans have seen in a minute.
The Longhorns' 49-0 victory over the Sooners earned Texas the largest margin of victory in history of the Red River Showdown, while also handing Oklahoma their worst shutout loss since the beginning of their program in 1895.
Adding insult to injury, Oklahoma has now started out their Big 12 play with three consecutive losses – a first in program history.
When coach Venables was hired in the off season to replace Lincoln Riley, many believed he could bring the Sooners back into national championship contention.
In 2000, the 51-year-old led the Sooners to the national championship title as the co-defensive coordinator and linebacker coach.
Now, spectators have lost all hope in Venables' abilities to lead Oklahoma to any success for the remainder of the season.
What's next for Brent Venables and his unstable Sooners football team?
With a slew of college football coaches having already gotten fired this season, Venables is looking to be the next coach in line on the job hunt.
Though the former Clemson associate head coach is barely a half-dozen games into his tenure at Oklahoma, his first school as an official head coach, the Sooners are already reaching new lows in conference play, creating a hole that may be too deep to dig out of.
Oklahoma's next date on the field is with fellow conference member Kansas, which won't be an easy game at the rather nonexistent rate the Sooners have been scoring.
Still, Venables remains hopeful about the rest of the season regardless of the worst start to a head coaching career college football has ever seen.
In a video tweeted by the Sooners' football account, coach Venables revealed his mission for building his team's culture of success.
"Growing and building something is not an easy thing," Venables said. "As you build the foundation, it takes a lot of, again, endurance and perseverance. There's gonna be some great moments like we had the first several weeks and then some not so great moments. How you handle all of that is really important."
Oklahoma's game against the Kansas Jayhawks is set for Saturday at noon EST at the Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
