The Lightning won 5-1, handing Pittsburgh their first loss of the season. Tampa also snapped a three-game losing streak in the process.

This was the second time these two teams have met in just two weeks of the 2021-22 NHL season, with the first game going Pittsburgh’s way in a 6-2 rout of the Lightning.

After a scoreless first period, the Lightning stormed out with their first goal and tacked on two more, going into the third with a 3-0 lead.

They kept the pressure on with yet another score before the Pens broke the shutout with a goal in the game’s final minutes.

Tampa sealed the win with one more goal of their own to finish things up at 5-1.

Lightning goaltender and last year’s playoff MVP, Andrei Vasilevskiy (27) had himself a spectacular night between the pipes.

He was practically back to last season's incredible playoff form, missing his first shutout of the season by just over a couple of minutes.

His goals-against average (GAA) was a shaky 3.13 coming into Tuesday night, but after this outing against the Pens, it’s sure to improve.

The big picture

The Lightning still have a lot of hockey left to play in search of a potential third consecutive Stanley Cup crown.

But if they consistently play as they did on Tuesday night, spreading the wealth with five goals by five players, they’ll find themselves cruising into the playoffs like the contenders they are seen as.

On Thursday, the Lightning are back at home to take on the Coyotes while the Penguins are also at home to face the Flames.
