NCAA Football: The Tigers stay fierce at home and tear up the Rebels in a big SEC showdown
Auburn, Alabama - The University of Auburn Tigers took it to their SEC Conference rivals, the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday night, snapping Mississippi’s three-game winning streak in the process.
The 18th-ranked Tigers defeated the 10th-ranked Rebels 31-20 for their sixth-straight win over Ole Miss. Both teams now sit in their conference at 6-2.
The Tigers came out of the gate scoring touchdown after touchdown as the Rebels just couldn’t keep up in this one.
Auburn never trailed in this game, leading by as many as 11 points multiple times, but it also took some big defensive plays late in the game to stop the Rebels from making any kind of comeback.
Ole Miss found itself in the red zone four times during the game but scored no points, that included a huge interception for the Tigers midway through the fourth quarter helping to seal Auburn’s win.
A strong defense, paired with a slightly unorthodox performance from their starting quarterback, proved to be successful for the Tigers against the Rebels.
The player spotlight
Auburn’s junior quarterback Bo Nix (21) was in the zone as he led his team to victory against the Rebels.
He was playing well throwing the football and running with it, where he found more success on the ground than in the air.
Out of Auburn’s four touchdowns, Nix chased in himself on three of them.
He finished the game by completing 22 out of 30 pass attempts for 276 yards and a touchdown, along with eight carries for 30 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
The big picture
The Tigers will have taken great pleasure in knocking off a top-ten FBS team with an impressive win. "I feel like everybody always looks down on (us), saying Auburn’s not going to win," cornerback Roger McCreary was quoted by AL.com as saying. "We’re always the low guys, so I feel like that always hyped us up, like OK, it’s nothing new to us."
This win was their second-straight victory over a ranked team this year.
While it will still take a lot to catch Alabama or Georgia, Auburn looks to at least move up a little bit in the FBS rankings by next weekend.
Next Saturday, the Tigers are on the road to play the Texas A&M Aggies, while the Rebels go back home to host the Liberty Flames.
