MLB: Diamondbacks rookie pitches a historic night in Arizona

Phoenix, Arizona - Another no-hitter was thrown in Major League Baseball this season, this time by a rookie who started the game on the mound for the first time in his career.

Tyler Gilbert (27), a left-handed rookie for the Arizona Diamondbacks, got his first start this season, pitching his way to a 7-0 win over the San Diego Padres.

But more importantly, he earned this season’s eighth no-hitter in the process.

Gilbert had been playing baseball in the minor leagues for six seasons before getting his chance this year with the D-Backs. He had previously made three appearances with Arizona this season as a relief pitcher, throwing only scoreless innings.

In his efforts on Saturday night, he threw five strikeouts and only walked three batters. There were not a lot of Ks in this pitching performance, but the other eight men with him on the field stepped up to help keep the Padres off the bases and make the night a historic one.

This no-hitter has now tied the major league record set in 1884, a year when overhanded throwing was allowed in baseball. Some would argue that technically, there are nine total no-hitters this season, if you include Gilbert’s teammate Madison Bumgarner throwing a seven-inning hitless game back in April.

Bumgarner’s outing isn’t officially counted by MLB officials because his game was part of a doubleheader, which doesn’t go for nine innings anymore.

According to ESPN Stats and Information research, Gilbert is now only the fourth pitcher to throw a no-hitter in their first career start. Ted Breitenstein in 1891, Bumpus Jones in 1892, and Bobo Holloman in 1953 had been the previous players to accomplish the feat.

Gilbert is the 15th different starting pitcher this season for Arizona but after this performance, his chances for another start on the mound have certainly gone way up.
