Detroit Tigers commentator benched for racist impression of MLB star Shohei Ohtani
Detroit, Michigan - Detroit Tigers TV commentator and former MLB Player Jack Morris had to answer for the racially insensitive answer he gave during a live telecast on Tuesday night.
It took less than 24 hours for Bally Sports Detroit, the local TV carrier for the Tigers' baseball games, to hand down a punishment for Morris’ (66) transgression.
He is suspended indefinitely from any Tigers broadcast, the network announced on Wednesday.
Morris used a "stereotypically" Asian accent when he responded "be very, very careful" to his broadcast colleague’s question about pitching strategies towards LA Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani, who is Japanese. Morris then made an attempt at an apology on the air during the ninth inning.
In regard to the disciplinary action handed down by the network, Bally Sports Detroit stated, "Bally Sports Detroit is extremely disappointed with the remarks analyst Jack Morris made during last night’s Tigers game... We have a zero-tolerance policy for bias or discrimination and deeply apologize for his insensitive remark."
The broadcaster also added that Morris will undergo "bias training to educate him on the impact of his comments and how he can be a positive influence in a diverse community."
