Baseball’s best: Modern-day slugger hits his way into the 500 homer club!
Toronto, Canada - The Detroit Tigers had a great day on Sunday, beating the Blue Jays 5-3 on the road. But one Tiger had an even better day, hitting his way further into the MLB record books with his 500th career home run.
Miguel Cabrera (38) was the man of the hour on Sunday afternoon as he made a place for himself in the exclusive 500 home run club.
Cabrera blasted the historic hit in the sixth inning off of Toronto pitcher Steven Matz, to become the 28th player in league history to achieve the milestone.
He is also the first Venezuelan-born player to hit the benchmark.
Adding even more rarity to the feat, Cabrera is also the first player from the Tigers franchise to hit 500 career home runs.
"It's something special for my country, for my family, to be able to do this ... I'm really happy,'' Cabrera told ESPN postgame.
Cabrera is currently in his 19th season at the Major League level, hitting his first home run back in 2003 as a member of the Florida Marlins.
In 2008, he joined the Tigers and continued his upward swing from there, including a Triple Crown season in 2012 where he led the American League (AL) in homers, RBIs, and batting average.
He also won back-to-back AL MVP awards in 2012 and 2013.
Cabrera now has 2,955 career hits, leaving him poised to potentially reach the even rarer 3,000 hit mark. Yet, with just 35 games remaining this year, he’ll likely have to wait until the 2022 season to make more baseball history.
