Katie Ledecky smashes tons of swimming records at Worlds!
Budapest, Hungary - Katie Ledecky extended her record haul of medals from the 2022 World Aquatic Championships with her latest 800-meter freestyle win on Friday.
In incredible fashion, Katie Ledecky continued her swimming dominance, winning all four of her events at the 2022 World Aquatic Championships.
She capped it off with an unprecedented 19th World gold medal and fifth consecutive title in her trademark event, the 800m freestyle.
Ledecky clocked 8 minutes, 8.04 seconds, prevailing by 10.73 seconds over Australian Kiah Melverton. The record-breaking athlete now owns the 27 fastest times in history in the 800m event.
On Friday, Ledecky became the first swimmer to ever win five consecutive World titles in an individual event. Her 19th career World gold medal broke her tie with Ryan Lochte for the second-most World Championship titles in history, behind only Michael Phelps' 26 wins.
Ledecky owns 22 career World Championships medals overall, also trailing only behind Lochte, who has 27, and Phelps, who has 33. She has 14 individual World titles, one shy of Phelps’ record.
Katie Ledecky keeps smashing records
Earlier in the week, Ledecky posted her fastest 4x200m free relay split ever, the fastest 400m free ever swim at a World Championships, and a 1500m free time that was 7.59 seconds faster than her Tokyo Olympic final time.
On Thursday, Ledecky broke the women's record for most career medals won at the World Championships ever when she captured her 21st medal in the 4x200 free relay.
But she didn't stop there. On Friday, she broke the record again – now the most awarded woman swimmer in World Championships with 22 World medals.
Ledecky still plans to compete through to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. A 10-time Olympic medalist, including seven golds, the 25-year-old only needs one more gold to tie Jenny Thompson's all-time Olympic record for women swimmers. Ledecky is also only two medals away from tying Thompson and Dara Torres for most all-time medals by a woman Olympic swimmer, who have 12.
