Golf: Hideki Matsuyama makes history with his first green jacket at the Masters
Augusta, Georgia - At the Masters in Augusta, the big question was whether Hideki Matsuyama could hold on to his lead and win his first green jacket.
Matsuyama was feeling the pressure on Sunday, as every other golfer on the course gave chase, hoping that he'd give up his top spot. Coming into Sunday, the championship was his to lose, but he held firm and won the 2021 Masters by just one stroke.
This means the 29-year-old is the first Japanese man to win a major golf championship and the first Asian man to win the Masters Tournament in its 87-year history.
Matsuyama finished the event -10, only shooting 1-over par, bogeying the last hole in the final round. He finished each of the first three rounds under 72, helping him gain and sustain the lead he needed to secure his first major championship. Will Zalatoris, a rookie at the Masters, finished just a step behind Matsuyama at -9.
A professional since 2013, Matsuyama received not only the traditional green winner's jacket but also $11.5 million in prize money.
Other notable finishers include Jordan Spieth, who ended the weekend with a 7-under par score, and Justin Rose, who wasn't too far behind at 5-under.
