NFL: Titans head coach is the latest to test positive for Covid-19
Nashville, Tennessee - Despite riding high through the NFL preseason, the Tennessee Titans have suffered a setback involving the state of their head coach’s health status.
Titans head coach Mike Vrabel (46) revealed he has tested positive for Covid-19 during his team’s press conference on Sunday.
He is reportedly quarantining, as per NFL guidelines, and if all goes well, he could be eligible to return well before Tennessee’s season opener against the Arizona Cardinals on September 12.
There is no word yet if he was exposed to the virus during his team's 34-3 win in Tampa Bay over the Bucs on Saturday, where he was seen mingling with various Tampa team members.
He told reporters on Sunday that he was experiencing an earache and sore throat, a few of the commonly reported symptoms of the virus. His condition at the time prompted him to take two rapid tests on Sunday that both came back positive.
As of Monday afternoon, he was awaiting the results of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, which is used to detect a more accurate presence of the virus.
Vrabel did share that he is vaccinated. However, it’s not known if the coronavirus strain he’s contracted is the latest Delta variant or not. It’s also not known if anyone else on the team has currently tested positive.
"As of now, I don’t think that anybody that has been tested this morning has tested positive," Vrabel said.
This isn’t the first time the Titans have clashed with Covid-19. They were the first football team to tackle an outbreak last year during the pandemic, which caused the league to postpone two games and hand out a $350,000 fine for all the trouble.
To be allowed back to the team, Vrabel must test negative twice within 48 hours or remain in quarantine for 10 days, according to current NFL protocols.
