NFL: The Niners trample all over the Rams in a Monday night shocker
Santa Clara, California - The San Francisco 49ers took the spotlight to close out Week 10 of the 2021 NFL season with a shocking blowout of their divisional rivals, the Los Angeles Rams.
The 49ers ran over the Rams 31-10 for LA’s first defeat on the road, also handing the Rams their second loss in a row.
Niners earned their first home win in over a year by absolutely dominating LA.
This is turning into one of San Francisco's favorite fixtures: their last home win before Monday night was in Week Six of last year, also against the Rams.
The Niners jumped out right from the start thanks to their defense intercepting a pass that led to their first touchdown, followed up by another pick that was run right back into the end zone, as they found themselves quickly up 14-0.
They never looked back after that.
The Rams did score a touchdown to open the second quarter, but San Francisco responded with 17 unanswered points through the next three quarters.
LA got back on the board with a field goal in the closing minutes, but everyone in the stadium knew this game was well over with by then.
The player spotlight
He wasn’t flashy, but Niners starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (30) led the offense during a masterful game on Monday night.
It was rumored that he would possibly share snaps in the game with rookie Trey Lance but with the way San Francisco was moving the ball down the field against the Rams defense, there was no need to give Garoppolo a break.
While the offensive game plan called for more running plays than passing, Garoppolo still was passing very effectively, only off the mark on four of his 19 pass attempts.
He finished the night with 15-for-19 passing, 182 yards, and two touchdowns.
The big picture
This was an undisputed shock – not just the result, but even more so the final score.
The Rams suffered a serious blow, but they’re still a contender for a deep playoff run, at least as long as their defense gets back on track. The addition of Von Miller to the roster last week should help with that.
And with top-level defensive players on the line, in the linebacker core, and secondary, the Rams should become a prime example of how "defense wins championships", despite allowing 31 points to a team that still has a losing record after Monday night.
Next Sunday, the 49ers (4-5) travel to Jacksonville to face the Jaguars (2-7) while the Rams (7-3) will travel in two weeks to take on the Packers (8-2).
