NFL: The Cowboys come away from Minnesota with a big road win
Minneapolis, Minnesota - The Dallas Cowboys survive a close game on the road to beat the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night.
The Cowboys defeated the Vikings 20-16 to close out Sunday’s NFL action as Dallas has now won six games in a row, while Minnesota misses out on a three-game win streak of their own.
After dropping their first game of the regular season, the Cowboys kept winning each week, coming into Sunday night’s matchup as the favorite.
They almost let this one get away from them, if not for their backup quarterback leading a game-winning drive in the final minutes of regulation to keep their winning ways intact.
Dallas was down throughout the first half as the score remained close and the Vikings entered halftime with a 10-3 lead.
The Cowboys got even more dogged after that, as they twice tied things up, once on their first drive to start the second half and then again going into the fourth quarter.
With under three minutes to go, the Vikings took the lead back again, but it didn’t last long as the Cowboys marched down the field for the game-winning touchdown.
The player spotlight
With their franchise quarterback out, the Cowboys started backup Cooper Rush (27) in place of Dak Prescott.
While he did see a tiny bit of action in Dallas’ Week Three win over the Eagles, this was his first start this season.
Rush did seem to struggle early, including throwing an interception late in the first quarter.
But he eventually stepped up to lead his team to victory when it mattered most.
He finished the night going 24-for-40 passing, 325 yards, two touchdowns, and one pick.
The big picture
The Cowboys have been off to a great start, really setting themselves apart from the rest of the teams in the NFC East.
And they definitely seem well on their way to taking the division title come season’s end, especially after proving they can win without their franchise quarterback.
It's a bit too early to dream, but this could very well be their first NFC East crown since 2018.
Next Sunday, the Cowboys (6-1) are back at home to host the Broncos (4-4) while the Vikings (3-4) hit the road to play the Ravens (5-2).
