NFL: The Cowboys and Cardinals clash in the desert during preseason action
Glendale, Arizona - The Arizona Cardinals pulled off some late-game heroics to win their first preseason game of the year over the Dallas Cowboys on Friday night.
The NFL preseason kicked off for the Cardinals in a big way as Arizona beat Dallas 19-16 at home thanks to a game-winning field goal in the final seconds of the game.
Matt Prater (37) played the role of the hero, booting the winning points through the uprights for Arizona’s first preseason win and Dallas’ second-straight preseason loss. Prater was also the main man for the Cardinals when his kicking game kept his team in the game, as he was responsible for 13 of Arizona’s 19 points.
The game was missing two of the more popular quarterbacks in the league, Arizona’s Kyler Murray and the Cowboys' Dak Prescott, who’s making his comeback to football from a terrible leg injury that ended his 2020 season in week five.
NFL veteran Colt McCoy started the game for the Cardinals and completed all but one of his seven passes for 69 yards.
But teammate Chris Streveler got the most out of his time on the field, going 12-for-24 and 107 yards passing as well as 55 yards on the ground.
Running back Eno Benjamin helped the Cardinals onto the scoreboard, rushing for a touchdown in the second quarter to provide the rest of the offensive point total.
Cooper Rush was the leading passer for the Cowboys, in place of Prescott. He threw for 89 yards on 7 of 13 passing.
However, it was Ben DiNucci who gave Dallas its only lead in the game with a one-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Smith in the fourth quarter.
The Cowboys will be back at home next week to play the Texans on August 21, while the Cardinals host the Chiefs on August 20.
