NFL: The Chiefs hold off the Cardinals for an impressive preseason road win in the desert
Glendale, Arizona - The Kansas City Chiefs continued their comeback from last season’s defeat in the Super Bowl by getting a road win over the Arizona Cardinals on Friday night.
Week two of the 2021 NFL preseason had the Chiefs winning 17-10 over the Cardinals, for their second-straight preseason win.
Kansas City’s backup quarterbacks took control to lead the team to victory, while their defense ran a strong program that held the entire Cardinals offense to just 239 total yards for the game.
Both Chad Henne (36) and rookie Shane Buechele threw a touchdown pass, but the rookie threw the football for 115 yards off 9-of-11 passing, despite an interception. Henne was 6-of-8 for 82 yards to go with his score.
The Chiefs’ main man at QB, Patrick Mahomes, likely saw the most action he’ll see in a preseason game as he started and played through the second quarter, but not before completing 10-of-18 passes for 78 yards and one interception.
Through nearly three quarters, the Chiefs were cruising with a 17-0 lead.
Kansas City’s defense was strong in the first half, holding Arizona’s star quarterback Kyler Murray to 1-of-4 passing for 2 yards and only 8 yards rushing during his time on the field. The Cards did finally score in the third quarter when Matt Prater kicked a field goal and Chris Streveler threw a touchdown pass to Ross Travis in the fourth.
Both teams have their third and final preseason game next week with the Chiefs heading back home on August 27 to face the Vikings, while the Cardinals will play the Saints in New Orleans on August 28.
