NFL: The Bengals pull off a late-game comeback to hand the Jags their fourth-straight loss
Cincinnati, Ohio - The Cincinnati Bengals worked some magic late in the game to keep the Jacksonville Jaguars on the losing end for the fourth time in a row.
The Bengals beat the Jags 24-21 on Thursday night to improve to 3-1, surprisingly giving them the AFC North division lead, at least until Sunday afternoon.
Joe Burrow (24), last year’s first overall draft pick, showed the current first pick, Trevor Lawrence, that he’s learned a thing or two over his short time in the NFL. He went 25-for-32 passing for 348 yards and got two touchdowns.
Lawrence did put in some work as well, but all he could muster was 17 of 24 pass attempts for 204 yards.
At first, it certainly appeared that the Jags were finally on their way to their first win of the season after managing the game’s momentum throughout the first half. Running back James Robinson led Jacksonville’s rushing attack, first by scoring one of his two touchdowns in the first quarter. He finished the game with 18 carries for 78 yards, to go with his two scores.
Lawrence also ran for a touchdown in the second quarter to help his team build a 14-0 lead going into the half.
But it was the Bengals’ turn in the third, as Burrow threw a 22-yard pass to C.J. Uzomah for a touchdown, the first of their two connections in the second half.
Joe Mixon also rushed for a touchdown late in the third to tie the game. He had 16 carries for only 67 yards.
With Robinson’s second touchdown run, the Jags took the lead back to start the fourth quarter, but the Bengals soon bounced back to tie the game again with Burrow’s second connection to Uzomah.
And finally, with no time left on the clock, Evan McPherson kicked a game-winning 35-yard field goal to clinch the game for the Bengals, his second winning kick this season.
The Bengals (3-1) will host the Packers (2-1) next Sunday while the Jaguars (0-4) will welcome the Titans (2-1) into town on the same day.
