NFL: Steelers stand tall to slip away with a big win over the Titans
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - The Pittsburgh Steelers came into Week 15 of the NFL season looking for a much-needed win in the hunt for the playoffs against the Tennessee Titans.
The Steelers got the 19-13 win on Sunday over the Titans to get back into the win column and keep their chances for an AFC Wild Card spot alive.
For Tennessee, this was a third loss in the last four games.
The Titans came out at the start of the game as the better team, with 10 points to Pittsburgh’s none in the first quarter.
The Steelers kicked a field goal early in the second quarter to pull within seven points, but Tennessee responded with one of their own just before halftime to restore the advantage.
It all changed in a second half that belonged to the Steelers, as they scored 16 straight points over the last two quarters to grab their first lead of the game.
Mixed with that traditionally stingy defense, Pittsburgh forced four turnovers by the Titans, including two fumbles and an interception, which erased any chances for a Tennessee comeback.
The player spotlight
Veteran cornerback Joe Haden (32) was playing in his first game in over a month, having come back from a foot injury. He proved yet again just how important he is to the Steelers defense.
The 12th-year defensive back has 24 total tackles and just one forced fumble in nine games played.
But that lone forced fumble was pretty valuable to his team, as it was one of the turnovers that did it for the Titans late in the game.
Haden finished the game with that one forced turnover and two total tackles.
The big picture
As of Sunday night, the Steelers are 10th in the AFC, three spots off the seventh and final playoff spot with three regular-season games to go.
They’re not out of the hunt just yet, despite having slim chances at this point of the season.
It's a tall order, since they’ll need to win all of their remaining games and get some help from other teams.
The Ravens, Bengals, and Browns will all have to falter at one point or another for Pittsburgh to enjoy more January football.
Next Sunday, the Steelers (7-6-1) will be on the road to face the Chiefs (10-4) while this Thursday night, the Titans (9-5) will be back at home to play the 49ers (8-6).
