NFL: Rodgers makes history as the Packers outlast the Browns at home
Green Bay, Wisconsin - The Green Bay Packers continue to cruise through the top ranks of the NFL after slipping by the struggling Cleveland Browns in a Christmas Day spectacular!
The Packers beat the Browns 24-22 for their fourth-straight win and a perfect 7-0 record on home turf.
Cleveland suffers their second loss in six days and looks to be out of the running for an AFC Wild Card spot.
Despite the close score, the Packers defense was just as big a star as Green Bay’s quarterback, Aaron Rodgers (37).
After the Browns jumped out with a touchdown in the game’s first drive to take an early lead, the Packers responded with a touchdown of their own to take just a one-point lead.
Green Bay then responded with another score to open the second quarter, extending their lead.
Cleveland pulled back to within one point, but the Packers scored once again to take a 21-12 lead into halftime.
Although they piled on a few more points in the third, the Browns managed to rack up 10 more points during the fourth quarter to trail by just two.
In the end, Browns ran out of chances after being intercepted a fourth time, a common theme that really hindered Cleveland’s chances on the day.
The player spotlight
It seems like every game Aaron Rodgers plays just further cements his place in the Packers franchise’s record books.
Against the Browns, he broke former Green Bay passing legend Brett Favre’s team record for career touchdowns with now 445 TD passes with the Packers.
He threw just over 200 yards in the game, on the low end for him, but as anyone will tell you, it’s all about the wins.
Rodgers finished the game with 24-for-34 passing, 202 yards, and three touchdowns.
The big picture
The Packers continue to distance themselves at the top of the NFC and no one looks likely to catch them.
Green Bay is 12-3, while second through fifth seeds in the NFC playoff standings each have 10 wins.
As long as the Packers win the remaining two games on their schedule, they will own the number-one seed and a first-round bye once the playoffs kick off next month. No one would bet on the Vikings and the lowly Lions throwing a wrench in the works.
Next Sunday, the Packers (12-3) will host Minnesota (7-7) while on January 3, the Browns (7-8) will be on the road to face the Steelers (7-6-1).
