NFL: Could the Buffalo Bills be relocating to Austin for a new stadium?
Austin, Texas – On Sunday, reports surfaced of the Buffalo Bills' desire to build a new stadium at the expense of taxpayers and fans alike, while eying a move to Central Texas if such demands aren't met.
The Buffalo Bills have its eyes set on building a brand-new football stadium that would reportedly cost roughly $1.1 billion, but there's a catch.
Rather than the NFL team footing the bill itself, Pegula Sports and Entertainment (PSE) – the team's owners – are asking that taxpayers fund the project 100%, according to multiple sources. It's something Buffalo News called a "non-starter" for many officials in the state's capital of Albany.
The proposed stadium would be built adjacent from the Bills' current home at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York.
The Associated Press reported that team owners asked the state for help with the funding for what would be a county-owned stadium in March 2021.
From insider accounts, it seems conversations surrounding PSE's desire for the venture to be completely funded by the people of New York state have not fared well for the owners with government negotiators.
Now, the organization is seeking out other cities that could potentially foot the bill for the desired billion-dollar stadium, allegedly singling out Austin, Texas as a top contender.
Austin City Council is unaware of the Bills' potential relocation plans
On Sunday, ESPN's Seth Wickersham tweeted out more insider information regarding the team's possible move to the heart of Texas, saying, "An ownership source tells me that Austin is a possible destination – or threat – as one of the 'other cities elsewhere that desire an NFL franchise and would pay handsomely for it.'"
As different estimated costs have circulated, a spokesperson for the Bills, Jim Wilkinson, told the Buffalo News that the price tag of $1.1 billion for the proposed new stadium was incorrect, but failed to provide a number in its place.
Whether conversations have taken place between PSE and government officials in Texas is unknown, but Governor Greg Abbott seems to be interested in the idea, having retweeted a local news story on Sunday about the Bills' rumored potential move.
This wouldn't be the first professional team to take to Austin, Texas. In 2019, the MLS made its official mark on the city by announcing the creation of an expansion team in Austin FC.
Since the team's home opener in June, Q2 Stadium – the home field of Austin FC – has proven itself to be the heartbeat of the city, packing in sold-out crowds for nearly every home game thus far.
With such massive success, it's not hard to believe local and state officials would be open to the idea of adding another professional team to the mix in Austin.
Yet, given the large presence of Dallas Cowboys fans across the state along with the stronghold of its financially powerful owner Jerry Jones, there might be more behind-the-scenes obstacles at play.
As the rumored potential move continues to make waves across the internet, Ryan Autullo, a reporter for the Austin American Statesman, said in a tweet that members of the Austin City Council had not been made aware of any such plans.
