NFL: Chiefs escape with an ugly but crucial home win over the Giants
Kansas City, Missouri - The Kansas City Chiefs prevailed in a rare must-win game against the New York Giants to close out the eighth week of the 2021 NFL season.
The Chiefs survived their primetime matchup to beat the Giants 20-17 on Monday night, improving their regular season record to 4-4.
Kansas City avoided their second-straight loss by doing just enough to get off of their own field with a win.
It was their fourth-straight game with multiple turnovers, something that’s been just as rare as the team having four total losses halfway through the season.
The Chiefs did score two touchdowns, but that was all they could manage by halftime, with NY not far behind as they into the break up 14-10.
With more lackluster play and no points from both teams in the third quarter, the game came down to the fourth as the Giants took the lead with a touchdown.
But they were beaten by two unanswered field goals, including a 34-yard winning kick with just over a minute to go, as the Chiefs ran away with the win.
The player spotlight
In quite an ugly game, it’s high time that a kicker, Harrison Butker (26), gets some credit. The Chiefs could easily be staring at another loss in if not for him.
Kansas City’s fifth-year placekicker kept his team in the game during the fourth quarter.
Though he’s actually considered a special teams player, he was also the Chiefs’ leading scorer in the game with eight total points, while two other players on offense each only scored six.
Butker was 2-for-2 with extra-point tries and 2-for-2 in field goals, including the game-winner.
The big picture
The Chiefs are the "proud" owners of the most turnovers so far in the season with 19 total.
They’re also lucky enough to be the only team on the list with a win-loss record that isn’t under .500 at this point.
However, that luck might run out soon, since their next three games on the schedule are against teams who are currently each division leaders, among them the Raiders and the Cowboys.
But first, it's the Packers (7-1) coming to town on Sunday, while the Giants (2-6) are back at home to take on the Raiders (5-2).
