NFL: Cardinals clipped by the Packers for their first loss of the season in Thursday night thriller

Glendale, Arizona - The Green Bay Packers have pulled off one of this season’s biggest upsets by handing the Arizona Cardinals their first loss of the 2021 NFL season on Thursday night.

The Packers got a big road win over the Cardinals 24-21, winning their seventh straight and making Arizona the last team this year to fall into the loss column.

Both teams now sit at 7-1 on the year.

Green Bay came into the contest short one of their biggest offensive weapons in Davante Adams, who’s currently listed on the reserve/Covid-19 list after testing positive earlier in the week.

But the Packers came ready to play with a game plan that helped them outlast the Cardinals.

After the Cards got on the board midway through the first quarter, the Packers responded with 10 points in the second to go into halftime with a three-point lead.

Both teams scored two more touchdowns apiece in the second half, but it was the Packers' defensive unit that made the difference on their way to wrapping up the hard-fought win.

Long-time Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb (31) took the stage looking like he did when first donned the green and gold as a rookie.

He’s back with the Pack after two seasons elsewhere, catching two scores on Thursday night that helped Green Bay stay ahead in the game.

He hasn’t been putting up the same kind of numbers that helped make a name for himself earlier in his career, but he certainly answered the call when a play needed to be made.

He caught only three passes for 15 yards, but two of those three grabs were for touchdowns.

The big picture

The Cardinals have finally lost a game because they simply got outplayed by the Packers.

They just lost defensive end J.J. Watt for the season earlier this week, and his presence would’ve made Aaron Rodgers’ night a lot tougher, possibly shifting the game more in Arizona’s favor.

They’ve got extra time now to regroup for the rest of the season as they still have the NFC West division lead.

Next Sunday, the Packers (7-1) are on the road against the Chiefs (3-4), while the Cardinals (7-1) will also travel to face the 49ers (2-4).
