Damar Hamlin response spurs applause from Bengals head coach
Cincinnati, Ohio - Days after Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin suffered from cardiac arrest during an NFL game against the Bengals, Cincinnati's Zac Taylor applauded Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott's swift and empathetic actions.
As Hamlin remains in critical condition at a Cincinnati hospital after being resuscitated mid-game and carted away in an ambulance, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor spoke to the media about what it was like being on the field on Monday night.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Taylor started off by saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Damar Hamlin, and his family and his loved ones and his teammates, coaches, the entire Bills organization."
"Everyone on the field could feel the seriousness of the situation," Taylor stated, referencing the moment during the Monday Night Football matchup between the Bills and Bengals when Hamlin stood up following a big hit before immediately collapsing.
Taylor proceeded to praise the medical personnel, referees, and the Bills head coach for their relatively calm and highly commendable response to a complex and tragic situation.
"The first thing [McDermott] said was, 'I need to be at the hospital with Damar. I shouldn’t be coaching this game,'" Taylor said of his initial conversation with the Bills' head coach. "That showed where his focus was. The way he led and processed this in the moment helped us make the right decision."
Monday's game was postponed indefinitely following Hamlin's exit via ambulance. Speaking on the 24-year-old's status, Hamlin's uncle said "it seems like he’s trending upwards in a positive way."
Our thoughts are with Hamlin, his family, and Bills Mafia during this trying time.
