All eyes on Cleveland for the 2021 NFL draft as first pick predictions hold
Cleveland, Ohio - The 2021 NFL draft started its first night live, from Cleveland, Ohio where some of the best players in college football heard their names called as they make the next step into the NFL.
To start things off, Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence (21) went where many draft experts projected him to end up, being drafted first overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Lawrence just came off of leading Clemson to a national championship this past season and already has high expectations to make a big improvement to a team that has been bottom-feeding offensively over the last ten years.
The Jags have also recently brought in new head coach Urban Meyer, who won NCAA titles at Florida and Ohio State to help them further attempt a successful overhaul.
Speaking on his new opportunity, Lawrence said that "I'm super excited to be coming to Jacksonville and play for you guys and can't wait to go to work."
With the second pick, the New York Jets selected QB Zach Wilson out of BYU. After trading away the last quarterback they drafted in Sam Darnold, the Jets needed to restart their rebuild from three years ago, which is why they brought in Wilson to take the helm.
Sticking with trends, the San Francisco 49ers used the third pick to draft a QB of their own with Trey Lance, out of South Dakota State University. Generally seen as an "unknown," mainly because of the attention geared towards Trevor Lawrence, Lance remained relatively high on numerous draft projection charts coming into Thursday night. And while the Niners are in limbo about who their quarterback of the future might be, they took initiative in drafting Lance.
For the fourth pick, the Atlanta Falcons grabbed TE Kyle Pitts from Florida. The Falcons, looking to do a little rebuilding of their own, were looking to get at least another top-rated target for QB Matt Ryan, going into the 2021 season.
The Cincinnati Bengals selected WR Ja'Marr Chase with the fifth overall pick, out of LSU. This pick was definitely needed since the Bengals let former All-Pro A.J. Green go west to Arizona, and were looking to fill a considerable hole in their offensive game plan. After selecting Joe Burrow last year, the Bengals reunited Chase with his former college teammate with the hopes of building a successful offense for the future.
Rounds two and three of the 2021 NFL Draft will commence on Friday, starting at 7 PM ET.
