Michigan State suspends four more players as things heat up after postgame brawl
Ann Arbor, Michigan - On Tuesday night, Michigan State athletic director Alan Haller and football coach Mel Tucker announced four more player suspensions after a fight that occurred following the Spartans' loss to in-state rivals the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday.
Following the altercation that was caught on video and seemed to involve several different scuffles between players in the tunnel after the game at Michigan Stadium, Michigan State initially only suspended linebacker Tank Brown, safety Angelo Grose, defensive end Zion Young, and cornerback Khary Crump for their involvement in the assault.
Now, the program has added indefinite suspensions for defensive ends Jacoby Windmon and Brandon Wright and cornerbacks Justin White and Malcolm Jones.
"We are transparently working with law enforcement and the Big Ten Conference to evaluate additional facts and evidence surrounding the events in Ann Arbor," Haller and Tucker said in a joint statement.
"We will continue to take appropriate action in this matter as we learn more. The student-athlete suspensions will remain in place until the investigations are completed."
After a second viral clip emerged capturing an "unidentified" Michigan State player swinging a helmet at Michigan defensive back Gemon Green, it was later revealed that the Spartans player was redshirt sophomore Crump.
Michigan State has now lost a total of eight players to Saturday's postgame violence, which adds more fuel to their team's flames of already dealing with a disappointing 1-4 conference start.
Yet, the hits have kept on coming for the team in the wake of the fallout from the fight.
Michigan's Gemon Green to press criminal charges against Spartan Players
Green, just one of the University of Michigan players attacked by Michigan State, is reportedly pressing charges after sustaining multiple injuries including a concussion.
Green has hired attorney Tom Mars, who released a statement on the assault.
"When college football players brutally attack a member of the opposing team with their helmets, resulting in the player suffering a concussion and other injuries, an apology won’t suffice," Mars said.
"There has to be severe consequences for this kind of misconduct. Not only does Gemon Green deserve to be compensated for his injuries. Severe consequences in this case will deter others who might think they can get away with brutally beating an opposing player and only get a slap on the wrist."
"I’ve got news for the MSU players who did this to Gemon. They are going to feel the full wrath of the law," he added.
Ja'Den McBurrows, another Michigan player attacked by the Spartans involved, is reportedly still receiving medical attention for his facial injuries.
McBurrows' mother, Kerrie Bryan, was in attendance during the game and revealed that doctors are doing more evaluations on her son's face because of the severity of his injuries.
Michigan football has not confirmed if Green and McBurrows will play in Saturday's upcoming game against Rutgers, though the star athletes will most likely miss the action on the field with their current injuries.
