Heisman Trophy: Hendon Hooker drops, Caleb Williams soars, and CJ Stroud remains as favorite
New York, New York - We are down to the wire for the 2022 Heisman Trophy watch list as players enter the final week of the regular college football season.
As we enter into college football's rivalry weekend, the Heisman Trophy race will be under a huge microscope.
Following a rough Week 12 that concluded with two Heisman candidates getting injured, much uncertainty lies ahead in the final week of the regular season.
Hendon Hooker of Tennessee is officially sidelined for the rest of the season while Michigan's Blake Corum's health is still in question.
USC quarterback Caleb Williams made a huge statement over the weekend after a stellar performance in a crucial victory over UCLA, but was still only in fifth place in last week's preview.
Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud remains the leader in the Heisman clubhouse, but did not perform his best against Maryland following a great Week 11 showing.
With one week left in the regular college football season, here are the top five candidates for the Heisman Trophy.
CJ Stroud - quarterback, Ohio State
Days away from his big showdown against rival Michigan, Stroud leads the pack as the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy. However, with USC's Caleb Williams close behind him, Stroud will need big performances against Michigan on Saturday and in the Big Ten Championship game.
Last week against Maryland, the Buckeye star quarterback played his second-worst game of the season, completing only 18 of 30 passes for 241 yards with one touchdown score.
Uncharacteristically, he finished with a 138.5 passer rating – the second-lowest mark of the season behind the Northwestern game (63.0 passer rating) his worst game of the year.
With a season resume full of broken records, if Stroud can show out for the rest of the season, the Heisman Trophy may very well travel back to Columbus.
Caleb Williams – quarterback, USC
In a huge statement win over crosstown rival UCLA, the Trojans clinched a berth to the Pac-12 Championship game and Caleb Williams quickly became a Heisman favorite.
Rounding out the top five last week, Williams is narrowly clipping Stroud from the top spot after performing a series-record of 502 total offensive yards against the Bruins on Saturday.
The Oklahoma transfer completed 32 of 43 passes for 470 yards and two touchdowns scores while rushing for another.
Williams will have a big test to close out the regular season on Saturday as the Trojans host No. 18 Notre Dame.
Blake Corum - running back, Michigan
Blake Corum has been a Heisman candidate for 12 solid weeks and the only running back up in the conversation for a possible nod.
But after rushing for 103 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries against Illinois on Saturday, Corum exited the game with a knee injury.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh hasn't revealed yet if Corum is healthy enough to play against the Buckeyes on Saturday, but if the Junior rusher misses any action on the field, his chances of winning the award will take a huge hit.
Corum currently leads the nation with the most touchdowns (19) and sits at No. 2 for the most rushing touchdowns (18) of the season.
Hendon Hooker - quarterback, Tennessee
It was a devastating weekend for Tennessee fans who witnessed their star quarterback go down with a season-ending injury.
The Volunteers football team confirmed that sixth-year Hooker suffered from a torn ACL and will be sidelined for the remainder of the season.
This year, Hooker's stats are, in a word, phenomenal! The record-breaker has totaled 27 passing touchdowns, five rushing touchdowns, and currently holds the record for most consecutive games with a passing touchdown (20).
While cheering on his team from the sidelines, Hooker will turn his focus on rehabbing back to his Heisman caliber self as he embarks on his journey to a promising NFL career.
Max Duggan - quarterback, TCU
In his Cinderella season with the undefeated Horned Frogs, quarterback Max Duggan has definitely made some Heisman moments this year, and his biggest took place last Saturday.
With under two minutes left in the game and no timeouts remaining, Duggan perfectly executed TCU's offense to get the team into field-goal range.
The Frogs won their nail-biting game against Baylor as kicker Griffin Kell nailed a 40-yard field goal just as time expired on the clock.
Following his strong performance, Duggan was awarded the Manning Award Star of the Week, which is given to the top college football quarterback on a weekly basis.
TCU will face Iowa State on Saturday in their last regular season game before heading to the Big 12 Conference Championship on December 3.
