College football: More big players make waves amid the NFL Draft and transfer portal

Oxford, Mississippi - After a year of talented college football players making definitive statements on the field, the 2023 NFL Draft class is seemingly getting larger by the day, with more athletes declaring for a chance to make their professional dreams come true. Meanwhile, big names are continuing to change things up via the transfer portal.

The latest player to join the list of college athletes declaring for the draft is the Ole Miss Rebels' Zach Evans.

The running back, who capped off the year with 936 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, announced his decision via Twitter on Friday.

"After much prayer, I have decided to forego my remaining year of eligibility and declare for the2023 NFL Draft," Evans said. "I appreciate all of your support and I look forward to making Rebel Nation proud."

A former nationally ranked No. 1 running back recruit, Evans originally signed with Georgia before flipping to TCU, where he spent his first two seasons.

In his three college seasons combined, he rushed for 1,999 yards, averaging 6.9 yards per carry.

Evans' final college showing on the field included an emotional game in his hometown of Houston at the Texas Bowl on Wednesday.

There, he completed eight of the Rebels' 43 rushing attempts for 37 yards during his team's 42-25 loss to Texas Tech.

Quarterbacks continue to find new teams in the college football transfer portal

Wisconsin continues to rebuild its offense under new head coach Luke Fickell and new offensive coordinator Phil Longo, and are doing so by making big moves via the transfer portal.

SMU quarterback Tanner Mordecai entered the transfer portal Thursday night and is reportedly expected to land at Wisconsin.

It would make sense for Mordecai to join the Badgers, as Longo coached UNC quarterback Drake Maye to a top-10 Heisman Trophy finalist finish, proving his strength and coaching prowess.

Mordecai, who set a team record with 13 games passing 300 yards or more, will be the perfect leader for Wisconsin's offense, which is currently lacking in offensive leadership on the field.

Like Wisconsin, Illinois football also didn't waste much time filling its quarterback hole for the 2023 season.

Just days after starter Tommy DeVito's NCAA waiver request for a sixth year of eligibility was denied, which will end his college career after this season, the Fighting Illini landed a passer from the SEC.

Ole Miss back up quarterback Luke Altmyer entered the transfer portal in late November, and on Thursday night became Illinois' newest team member.

Altmyer's addition to the Illini football team comes just shortly after the program lost its defensive coordinator Ryan Walters to Purdue football, becoming the Boilermakers' new head coach.
