Colt Brennan, former University of Hawai'i football star, tragically dies
Newport Beach, California - Colt Brennan, formerly of the University of Hawai'i and the Washington Football Team died at the age of 37.
Brennan died in a Newport Beach-area hospital on Tuesday morning, after ingesting an unknown substance that was laced with Fentanyl, according to his father.
Terry Brennan told the Honolulu Star Advertiser that his son had sought out substance abuse treatment just hours before dying, but that had unfortunately fallen through prior to the fatal mishap.
Colt Brennan was known for his time as Hawai'i's starting quarterback from 2005-2007, where he led the Rainbow Warriors to a sense of relevance in the NCAA. He threw for over 4,000 yards each season in college, including a record-setting season in 2006 where he threw 58 touchdown passes, an NCAA record that stood until 2019. Brennan was also a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2006 and 2007.
Brennan was drafted by Washington in 2008, but injuries kept him from ever playing a single regular season in the NFL and he was soon cut from the team. A terrible car accident a couple of years later also hindered his chances of playing consistent football on a professional level and he developed substance abuse issues not long after. Brennan played in the Canadian Football League, the United Football League, and the Arena Football League before retiring in 2014.
Terry Brennan said that Colt's family was by his side during the final moments.
