College B-Ball: Bulldogs keep top spot by routing the Longhorns
Spokane, Washington - The Gonzaga Bulldogs continued playing like the top college basketball team in the nation with a dominating win at home over the Texas Longhorns.
The top-ranked Bulldogs beat the fifth-ranked Longhorns 86-74 on Saturday for their second-straight win this season, while Texas fell into the loss column for the first time this year.
This win was the 53rd-consecutive win at home, the last loss coming in 2018.
After both teams settled in at the start, Gonzaga took off and never looked back, achieving several double-digit leads through the first half of action and going into the midway up 20 points.
In fact, the Longhorns never had a lead in the game at all.
Texas did make some decent adjustments in the second half and even outscored Gonzaga 47-39 at one point in time.
But the damage was already done in the first 20 minutes, leaving the Longhorns with no choice but having to play catchup with the Bulldogs.
Both teams were close to one another overall on the stats sheet, but Gonzaga simply made more shots than Texas in the end.
The player spotlight
Gonzaga’s junior forward Drew Timme (21) had the biggest night of anyone on the floor.
He was definitely in the zone, only missing four shots the entire game.
He was also the game’s leading scorer by a landslide, as no other player in the game scored over 20 points.
Timme finished the game shooting 15-for-19, scoring a career-high 37 points with seven rebounds and three assists.
The big picture
While it’s just been two games in this new basketball season, the Bulldogs are certainly playing with a chip on their shoulder after losing last year’s national championship game to Baylor.
However, starting the season as the top-ranked team should give them more than enough encouragement to finally reach the top of the mountain at the Final Four in March.
On Monday, the Bulldogs host the Alcorn State Braves while the Longhorns look to bounce back at home against the Northern Colorado Bears on Wednesday.
