Big Ben bids adieu to Steelers Nation once and for all
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Longtime Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is hanging up his pads for good.
On Thursday, Steelers Nation got the official confirmation they've been expecting: their 18-year quarterback, Big Ben, is retiring.
The two time Super Bowl champion announced his retirement in a video posted to Twitter on Thursday morning as a "truly grateful man."
In the video, Roethlisberger thanked the Rooney family, who have long been majority owners of the Steelers, along with the team's current head coach Mike Tomlin, and "all the coaches that have poured into me."
He went on to thank his teammates for their, "Shared commitment to wearing the black and gold with pride and dignity."
Last but certainly not least, the 39-year-old addressed and showed his gratitude for the fans of Steelers Nation.
"Thank you for accepting and supporting me as your quarterback over the years. Football has been a gift, and I thank God for allowing me to play it, surrounding me with great people, love, and honor," Roethlisberger said.
The video ended with the newly retired quarterback removing his name placard from his locker in the team locker room, solidifying the end of an era.
The Steelers surprised themselves by landing a spot in the playoffs this year, only to be blown out 42-21 by the Kansas CIty Chiefs in the Wild Card round.
That might have been Roethlisberger's last game as a Steeler, but his legacy will certainly live on forever.
