NBA: The Mavs hold to clip the Pelicans at home for three-straight wins
Dallas, Texas - The Dallas Mavericks had an easy night at home as they dominated the New Orleans Pelicans for their third-straight win this season.
The Mavs beat the Pelicans 108-92 on Monday night to improve their regular season record to 7-3 while handing the one-win Pelicans their seventh loss in a row.
Dallas has been quietly holding their own in the NBA’s Western Conference, sitting among the early season favorites to end up with a playoff spot next spring.
But like they did in their embarrassing loss to the Warriors, the Pelicans jumped out to a decent lead as the first quarter came to a close, only to drop off badly afterwards.
Dallas adjusted to take control of the game from the second quarter on as another chance for New Orleans to end their losing skid slowly slipped away as the Mavs controlled the momentum going forward, gaining as much as a 22 point lead midway through the fourth.
It was quite a disappointment for the Pelicans, for whom a considerable 46-32 advantage scoring points in the paint and four out of five of their starters getting to double-figures was hardly a consolation.
The player spotlight
The Mavs’ scoring superstar, point guard Luka Doncic (22) has been at the forefront of Dallas’ offensive program this season.
He’s been his team’s leading scorer with 24.5 points per game, nearly 10 points better than the next man, fellow guard Jalen Brunson.
Doncic also has five double-doubles so far this season, also leading the team.
Though he finished the night shooting 10-for-21, 25 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
The big picture
Dallas is currently tied with the Utah Jazz, who are currently going through a rough patch, having lost their last two games. The Mavs have a good chance of sneaking ahead of them in the conference standings, given the favorable schedule.
"If we can keep this record 7-3 every 10 games, that’s pretty solid," Reggie Bullock told the Mavs website, praising the team's strong defense.
On Wednesday, the Mavericks head to Chicago to run with the Bulls while the Pelicans go back home to host the Thunder.
