NBA: The Jazz bounce back with win over disappointing defending champs Bucks
Milwaukee, Wisconsin - The Utah Jazz, coming off of their first loss of the regular season, went into Milwaukee to face the defending NBA champs and kept the Bucks on an unusual early skid.
The Jazz beat the Bucks 107-95 to get back in the win column and set Milwaukee on a three-game losing streak in the process.
The last unbeaten team in the league suffered their first regular-season loss just a night earlier, but they came back to get a win against an opponent that seems to be struggling badly.
The Bucks have won just once at home so far this season and they had trouble keeping up, at best managing to tie Utah twice in the first quarter.
Milwaukee wasn’t totally out of sorts and it was never too far behind the Jazz, trailing by nine at halftime.
The second half was more of the same, but the Jazz did achieve their biggest lead of the game during that time, a 17-point advantage.
The Bucks pulled it back to within four with under six minutes to play, but Utah turned up the heat and pulled away for good as time ran out on the faltering Bucks.
The player spotlight
Utah’s leading scorer, shooting guard Donovan Mitchell (25) led the way for his team on Sunday night, putting in another night of solid scoring.
After putting in a season-high 30 points in Saturday night’s loss to the Bulls, he was looking to make his efforts really count with a win against the Bucks.
Mitchell was even outplaying last year’s Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, besting the Bucks’ big man on the stat sheet.
He finished the night shooting 10-for-18, including 4 of 9 from behind the arc, scoring a game-high 28 points, and four rebounds, helping his team back to the top of the standings in the West.
The big picture
The Bucks might’ve won last year’s crown, but they look nothing like champions at the moment.
They’re slipping on a three-game skid and are still smarting from that unbelievable 42-point blowout at the hands of the Heat.
We might only be seven games into the season, but if the Bucks don’t straighten up soon, the very short list of defending NBA champions who don't make the following season's playoff might get a bit longer.
On Tuesday, the Jazz are back at home to host the Kings, while the Bucks hope to snap their skid on the road against the Pistons.
