NBA: Porter Jr. and the Nuggets make mega-deal just as training camp gets underway

Denver, Colorado - The Denver Nuggets locked up another one of their big names, and not another day too soon as NBA training camps are starting to take off this week.

Michael Porter Jr. (23) will be with the Nuggets for at least five more years now that both sides agreed to a designated rookie maximum extension that could pay him over $200 million.

His agent, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, first broke the news to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Monday.

Porter Jr. could more specifically make $207 million when all is said and done, but only if he’s named to one of the three All-NBA teams after this upcoming season’s end.

If he falls short of one of those honors, he’ll make "only" $172 million – still a pretty big chunk of change.

In the regular season last year, Porter Jr. averaged 19 points and 7.3 rebounds over 61 games played. His final product declined a bit in the playoffs, where he scored 17.4 points and 6.2 boards over 10 games.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Porter Jr.’s teammate, Aaron Gordon, locked himself into a lucrative four-year contract extension as the Nuggets look to go farther than the second-round sweep they suffered last season at the hands of the eventual Western Conference Champs, the Phoenix Suns.

With this deal in place, Denver will likely start Porter Jr., Gordon, point guard Jamal Murray, and reigning MVP Nikola Jokic to go up against the league’s best.

They certainly seem poised to go far in an already loaded Western Conference with teams like the Suns, Lakers, Clippers, and Jazz all looking to win themselves a ring.

The Nuggets begin their regular season on Monday, October 4, on the road against the LA Clippers.
