"Lakers guard Dennis Schröder underwent successful surgery today to repair the ulnar collateral ligament on his right thumb," the team said in a statement on Monday evening.

He will be re-evaluated by team doctors in around three weeks, and "further updates will be provided at that time," the statement read.

Schröder suffered the injury during a pre-season game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He could miss more than 10 games during his recovery.

The player signed with the Lakers late in free agency in July, but due to his duties with Germany during the European Basketball Championship and visa issues, he missed most of the pre-season.

Schröder already played for the Lakers between 2020 and 2021.

The regular season of the NBA starts on Tuesday, when the Lakers visit the Warriors and the Boston Celtics host the Philadelphia 76ers.
