Notre Dame's possible coaching targets to replace legendary Mike Brey
South Bend, Indiana - Who will replace Notre Dame's all-time winningest basketball coach Mike Brey?
It's official! On Thursday, Notre Dame announced that their legendary coach Mike Brey is set to retire at the end of the season.
Brey has guided the Fighting Irish to unprecedented heights during his 23-year tenure, including an ACC Championship title and 13 NCAA tournament appearances.
But now, the university is left with a gaping hole in a high-profile position that is expected to draw significant interest from coaches of all ranks.
While the decision on who becomes the Irish's next head coach boils down to a slew of undisclosed factors, let's look at the pool of potential candidates that Notre Dame may be keeping close tabs on.
Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann
One of the biggest names to headline Notre Dame's coaching hunt is Buckeyes head coach Chris Holtmann.
If the Irish want to go with top-ranked coach, their best bet falls under the leadership of Holtmann.
While the sixth-year Ohio State coach is currently having a rough season, his overall coaching record is quite impressive.
In his three seasons at Butler from 2014-17, Holtmann garnered a 70-31 record that capped off with a National Coach of the Year honor.
In his first season with the Scarlet and Gray, he earned the Big Ten Coach of the Year and Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year Awards after leading the Buckeyes to an NCAA tournament appearance.
In his most recent full seasons with the Bucks, Holtmann compiled a 117-64 record with 20-plus wins in each campaign.
With a resume this pretty, hiring Holtmann may require a substantial increase to the role's salary, but his buyout is only $2.5 million.
Will Miami Heat assistant Chris Quinn come back home to Notre Dame?
If there is one man deserving of a call from Notre Dame's top office, it's Fighting Irish Alum Chris Quinn.
Quinn was an exceptional player for Notre Dame under current head coach Brey as a three-year starter and two-time co-captain for the Irish.
During his illustrious collegiate career, Quinn was named to the All-Big East First Team as a senior, compiling a career record of 1,454 points – ranking 16th in most scored points in Notre Dame history.
In 2006, Quinn entered the NBA with a spot on the Miami Heat before starting his coaching career with the franchise in 2013.
As an assistant coach with the franchise, Quinn has guided Miami to five NBA divisional titles and two conference titles.
With his name flying across the internet as a possible new hire for Notre Dame, Quinn's qualifications well exceed the Irish's standards to continue the winning legacy that Brey created.
Notre Dame has yet to speak on any potential candidates for the head coaching position following Brey's retirement.
