New Mexico basketball program in danger, with season erased amid possible violations!
Las Cruces, New Mexico - The New Mexico State men's basketball team won't be vying for a national championship this year after the university indefinitely canceled their basketball season over potential university violations.
The Aggies were scheduled to take on California Baptist on Saturday night, but the game will no longer be taking place.
"New Mexico State University is suspending operations for the men’s basketball program until further notice," the university said in a statement. "NMSU personnel were recently informed of new allegations, separate from the events that took place in Albuquerque late last year, involving potential violations of university policy."
In November, Aggies basketball found itself involved in a huge scandal when forward Mike Peake shot and killed a fellow student who attacked him with a baseball bat.
Now, a new investigation into the program – reportedly separate from the shooting – surrounds hazing issues amongst team players.
Along with the indefinite team suspension, the university has also decided to place the coaches on paid administrative leave.
What's lies ahead for New Mexico State men's basketball?
Just one year ago, the Aggies were the darlings of college basketball, winning the WAC Championship and their first NCAA Tournament game since 1993.
But ever since that historic high point, the men's team has been a complete disaster, finding itself in the heat of ongoing drama. It's no wonder that speculation is growing over players possibly opting to transfer away from the program.
With the future of New Mexico basketball in the balance , only time will tell if the program will be able to recover from this season's turmoil.
