What will the new era of basketball look like for powerhouse programs Duke and Villanova?
In the most talked about programs during the offseason, Duke and Villanova, which are both under the new leadership of Jon Scheyer and Kyle Neptune respectively, have been tasked with replacing legendary coaches Mike Krzyzewski (Duke) and Jay Wright (Villanova).
For Scheyer, thankfully, Duke's recruiting hasn't taken a hit following the retirement of Krzyzewski.
The Blue Devils currently have the No. 1 class for 2022, headlined by three of the nation's top recruits: Dereck Lively II, Dariq Whitehead, and Kyle Filipowski.
Neptune's situation at Villanova, however, is much different than Duke's to say the least.
Replacing the now-retired Jay Wright, Neptune lost key players such as Collin Gillespie and Jermaine Samuels to the NBA draft last year.
Due to this, he will be relying on a pair of highly touted freshmen – Cam Whitmore and Mark Armstrong.
Villanova Wildcats prepare for a season like no other
Kyle Neptune, the first-year Wildcats head coach, will also rely on his experienced veteran returnees including guard Justin Moore. That is, if the star senior is ready to take the hardwood floor after suffering from a torn Achilles in March.
The two programs' season openers on Monday should reveal much of what is to come following the end of the historic era with the resignation of their former coaches.
Duke will return this season as the 2022 regular-season ACC conference champions while Villanova will hit the court as the reigning Big East champions. Both programs made it to the NCAA Final Four tournament last year.
Duke will begin their season on Monday against Jacksonville at 7 PM ET, while Villanova will look to take down La Salle at home at 7 PM ET.
