College basketball: Wolfpack claws down rival Panthers for a huge road win
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - The NC State Wolfpack, one of the top teams in women’s college basketball, continued their stellar style of play in their first ACC conference game of the season against the Pittsburgh Panthers.
The second-ranked Wolfpack blew out the unranked Panthers 89-54 on Friday night for their ninth-straight win.
At the same time, the Panthers had their three-game winning streak snapped.
NC State put on full display in this game, why this team is among the nation’s best squads.
It took the Panthers two minutes after the opening tip to finally score, but by then they were already trailing the Wolfpack and things would stay that way for the rest of the game.
The Wolfpack simply dominated this game from the start, holding the Panthers to low-scoring quarters as they went into halftime with a 42-23 lead.
They kept it up in the third as the Wolfpack ended up holding Pitt to three-straight quarters of 13 or fewer points with the final quarter left to play.
Weirdly, the Panthers put up the highest point total in any quarter during the game with 21 points, but the climb was already far too steep by that point.
The player spotlight
The Wolfpack's ferocious performance was led by junior center Camille Hobby (21), who came off the bench to put in a great performance on the court against the Panthers.
The 21 year-old and her teammate Raina Perez banded together to co-lead their team in scoring on Friday night.
Hobby finished the game with 7-of-10 shooting from the field overall for 15 points, seven rebounds, and one block. Amazingly, she did all her scoring in a 12-minute spell during which she was simply on fire.
The big picture
As the top team in the ACC, NC State is only behind the South Carolina Gamecocks, who gave them their only loss so far this season, in the nation’s overall rankings.
But being ranked number two isn’t bad at all for the Wolfpack, especially if they come out firing on all cylinders like they just did against Pittsburgh.
This season, they’re looking to get further than the Sweet Sixteen appearance they achieved in last year's national tournament, falling to Indiana in the Regional Semifinals.
On Sunday, the Wolfpack will head home to take on the Saint Mary's Gaels while the Panthers will host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on December 19.
